Websites that do business and do good

Got a website? Need a website?
If you’re pulling your hair out with your website because it isn’t easy to use, things are going off-kilter, and you’re not getting responses from your website developer… we should talk.
Maybe your website’s outdated, hard to manage, or lacks the design quality needed to truly connect with your audience.
Or maybe you don’t have access to your website (help!) and need to start again.
And, if you don’t have a website already – you’ve found the right place.

At Two Sparrows, we do website design differently - for your benefit
We could start by showing you the websites we’ve designed or what our designs cost.
But we know you’re probably looking at a browser full of website designers, trying to work out who is the best fit for you.
So, here’s how we do web design differently – and why it makes a difference to your business.
You need full control over all your digital assets because they’re often what drives business. Everything we do is driven by putting you in control of the content we design for you. Because the old way isn’t the best way.
Here’s what we do to put you first in our web design services:
- We make sure you own your domain name (an essential business asset which many design agencies purchase on behalf of their clients … but means you don’t have the rights to your name!).
- You have full access and administration rights to your website (because it’s your website, not ours).
- We train you to manage your blog and website (so you don’t have to rely on someone else to make the changes you need made … yesterday).
- You have the rights to all your design content (you paid for the work, so it’s yours.).
It’s easy to make assumptions about people, and it’s important not to make assumptions if you want to improve your relationships with your customers.
This is why we ensure our designs are inclusive to those who interact with them—whether it’s what they want from your website, the language we use, or the functionality.
- We think about how people interact with your website—do they use screen readers, or do they need bigger font sizes? Is English their first language or do you need a dual-language website?
- We work with copywriters who are well-versed in user experience, minimising clicks, and creating a straightforward route through your website for users to get to where they need to be.
- We consider their privacy and use Matomo rather than Google Analytics, so we can see how people are using your website, but you’re in charge of what happens with their data rather than Google.
- We use images on our websites that are representative of Aotearoa New Zealand people and places.
- We’re constantly learning and incorporating new information we learn about diversity in our design process.
Living in New Zealand and close to our Pacific neighbours means we can’t escape the impacts of climate change. We reduce, reuse and recycle at home and work, so why not think about how our digital marketing impacts the environment?
We think about the ecological impact of everything we design:
- We’ve changed our website servers from hosting services in the USA to New Zealand-based hosting.
- We’ve partnered with a New Zealand-based host that’s taking positive environmental actions.
- We reduce the energy use of the websites, from plugins and design elements to button clicks and images, while ensuring they still meet your business goals.
- And we’re constantly looking to reduce the environmental impact of the websites we design.
Change has to start somewhere, so it may as well start here.

And this brings results
A case study: jondunning.com
Jon Dunning’s website is an excellent example of our eco-led approach. Through precise coding, perfectly-sized images, appealing SVG graphics, clever colour choices, and thoughtful content, we’ve significantly reduced its environmental impact over the long-term. Hosting on local servers – powered by renewable energy – adds to its clean, green credentials.
Using websitecarbon.com’s rating system for a website’s carbon emissions, the carbon footprint for Jon’s website is as slight as possible – achieving an A or B rating for nearly all its pages. This performance significantly outpaces the global average, which falls below E.
Jon’s likely to want video content on his website in the future. As we keep bringing ourselves up to speed in what’s new in the eco-led space, we will explore the best way to meet his needs while protecting his website’s light touch on the planet.
